House of Staunton Wild Knight Chess Set
By Adam
“Hand-carved golden rosewood and boxwood pieces with a wild, expressive knight. The chess set I'll keep for life.”
I researched chess sets before landing on this one. House of Staunton's Wild Knight Series is an heirloom-quality set, and it makes you want to play every time you walk past it.
What I got
- The Wild Knight Series Chess Set, Box & Board Combination
- Pieces: Golden Rosewood and Natural Boxwood
- Box: Brazilian Rosewood Luxe Slide-top Chess Box
- Bag: Deluxe Chess Board Bag, 24" x 24"
Why it's special
The knights
The knights are the star, and they're where the set gets its name. Each one is hand carved by House of Staunton's artisans, with a wild, expressive look that makes the standard plastic knight feel lifeless.
The weight
The pieces are heavily weighted, with billiard cloth pads on the bottom. The king stands 3.75 inches tall with a 1.6 inch base, and every piece lands on the board with a satisfying, solid thunk.
The wood
Golden rosewood against natural boxwood is a warm, beautiful contrast. It looks like furniture, not a game.
The board, box, and bag
The combination comes with a wooden board with 2.25 inch squares, which suits these pieces perfectly. The slide-top rosewood box keeps the pieces safe, and the padded bag means the board can travel.
Who it's for
Anyone who plays regularly and wants a set they'll pass down, or anyone looking for a gift that will be used for decades.
